San Antonio will house one of the state’s two evacuee shelters ahead of two tropical storms that may impact East Texas this week.
The shelter will be adopted from a COVID-19 medical facility for evacuees who are in need, Gov. Greg Abbott said Sunday, stressing that everyone should still try and social distance and wear masks even during the emergency response.
The Alamo Regional Command Center has been activated in San Antonio to help with resources like fuel, hygiene and shelter, the Texas Department of Emergency Management said. The second shelter will be north of Houston.

Tropical Storm Marco is expected to make landfall in Louisiana Tuesday before moving into Texas, while Tropical Storm Laura, which will likely become a Hurricane, will hit the central Gulf Coast near the Texas-Louisiana border on Wednesday. On Sunday, Abbott issued a state of disaster ahead of the storms for 32 counties across Texas, including Bexar County.
The San Antonio area is expected to “remain on the drier side of Laura,” but isolated showers are a possibility for Wednesday and Thursday, the National Weather Service said.
